Ikeda 20th Century Museum of Contemporary Art

Summary

This is Japan’s first genuine modern art museum. Japan’s first 20th century art museum was established in 1975 on Ippekiko-keyaki Street, Izu by Eiichi Ikeda, the founder of Nichireki Co., Ltd. The building was designed by a sculptor “Bukichi Inoue”. The outer walls of the building were the first in Japan to be reinforced with stainless steel. Rooms are organically and uniquely connected easily to appreciate the exhibits. Over 1,400 pieces were donated by Mr. Ikeda. They are produced in 20th century and based on the theme “Humanity”. You can always see the epic and excellent works by international masters including Renoir, Bonnard, Picasso, Matisse, Leger, Chagall, Warhol, Miro, Dali, and de Kooning. Special exhibitions are also held every three months in the exhibition room on the first floor.
